Caritas PH working with dioceses to help flood victims

MANILA: The humanitarian arm of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is closely coordinating with dioceses and archdioceses to determine the necessary assistance to be given to those affected by widespread floods due to Super Typhoon Carina and the enhanced southwest monsoon. "Caritas Philippines is dedicated to providing immediate relief. We're working closely with dioceses to ensure swift delivery of aid to those most in need. Caritas Philippines' humanitarian team is coordinating the monitoring activities with the different diocesan social action centers (DSACs) including their situation and local responses," the group said in a statement Thursday. Aside from providing concrete assistance, the group also intends to provide moral support to those affected by the calamity. "We stand in solidarity with affected families, striving to bring them comfort and hope in the wake of this disaster," it said. At the same time, the Church organization is appealing to the public for their financ ial support. "This morning, the call for donations has been circulated to the Social Action Network and the public," it added. The donations may be deposited to Caritas Philippines' different bank accounts, under the uniform name of "CBCP Caritas Philippines Foundation Inc". The bank accounts and account numbers are BPI (4951-0071-08); Metrobank (632-7-632028322); BPI (4951-0071-16); Metrobank (632-7-632028586); and BDO (004508034192). On the other hand, Catholic churches have provided shelters to evacuees by opening their parishes. In a Facebook post, the Diocese of Novaliches reported that nearly 5,000 families sought shelter in their parishes and chapels. "These churches provide safe shelter and basic necessities for displaced individuals and families. These evacuation centers provide essential services, such as food, water, and medical assistance," the diocese added. Second collection The Archdiocese of Manila offered prayers and sacrifices for the victims of the typhoon. In a circular issued Thur sday, Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula also asked priests to conduct second collection in all Masses this weekend. 'My heart and prayers go out to all those affected by the heavy rain and flooding. We extend our sincere gratitude to the churches and homes that opened their doors to accommodate those affected. The solidarity among Christians is deeply felt in times like these,' he said. Proceeds from the second collection shall be remitted to the Accounting Office of the Arzobispado de Manila on or before Aug. 7. 'May we request our priests, consecrated men and women, and lay leaders to continue extending the compassion of the Lord Jesus to the victims, the poor, the hungry, and all those in need,' he said.
